2023 Stop the Vogtle Vote

Dear Friends,

On October 27, Georgia WAND and Nuclear Watch South filed a Petition to Hold in Abeyance with the Georgia Public Service Commission. The petition is asking the PSC to postpone hearings and a vote on Georgia Power's request to pass $7.5 billion in Vogtle construction mistakes, delays, and cost overruns to Georgia electric customers until after PSC elections can be held. Unless the delay is granted, hearings will be held on December 4-6, with a final vote on December 19, including decisions by two PSC members who are serving beyond their terms of elected office.

PSC elections were canceled in 2022 by federal court order which ruled Georgia to be out of compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 for holding statewide elections for district offices. As a result, two of the five PSC commissioners' terms expired last year. To proceed as scheduled under these circumstances is unethical and inappropriate, as the PSC faces the largest financial decision in Georgia's history!

The PSC has our petition under review until November 27 to allow time for interested parties to file their responses. November 27 is just one week before the hearings would commence. We have a very limited timeframe to mobilize this direct action. Please sign today and share this opportunity with your friends and colleagues!

We invite all Georgia individuals and organizations to endorse the Open Letter to Stop the Vogtle Vote below. The letter was delivered to PSC Chair Jason Shaw and Georgia Power CEO Kim Greene on November 14, 2023.
