The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) will hold a public hearing on August 28th, at its Washington, D.C. headquarters. The DNFSB’s mission is to provide analysis, advice, and recommendations to the Secretary of Energy as to provide adequate protection of public health and safety at defense nuclear facilities of the Department of Energy (DOE). The DNFSB currently monitors our local DOE nuclear weapons facility, the Savannah River Site (SRS). The public hearing, regarding DOE Order 140.1, could result in less oversight and policing of all DOE sites, impacting needed safety evaluations and recommendations for such nuclear facilities. Georgia WAND, and other nuclear harm reduction advocates, believe that such oversight is crucial and will continue to advocate for its necessity. More updates to come in the following weeks.
