Hours after the 35th Anniversary event, Dr. Helen Caldicott and Georgia WAND executive director Lindsay Harper both traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Physicians for Social Responsibility Visionary Leaders Symposium now in its fourth year. The event serves to recognize individuals and/or organizations for their exemplary efforts in advancing nuclear weapons abolition and/or addressing environmental risks to human health, including the catastrophic consequences caused by climate change, through collaborations that strengthen the PSR mission. PSR framed the panel conversation around environmental justice, sacrificed communities, and the leadership of women and people of color at decision making tables, Those on the panel included Kelly Campbell – Oregon PSR, Lindsay Harper – Georgia WAND, Catherine Killough – Women Cross DMZ, Jaqui Patterson – NAACP, Jeff Carter – PSR ED, Moderator – Dr. Heidi Hutner, with a Keynote Address from Dr. Helen Caldicott. Lindsay was able to share about the expansion of Plant Vogtle and increased activity at the Savannah River Site, the winning strategy of supporting the leadership development of black women and women of color in frontline communities, and building authentic relationships.
An awards reception later that evening honored Marylia Kelley, Co-Founder and Executive Director of TriValley CAREs (Communities Against a Radioactive Environment), Kelly Campbell and Regna Merritt, Chapter Leaders of Oregon PSR, and Dyanna Jaye co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, a youth-led nonprofit pushing immediate political action on climate change.
