Mother’s Day for Peace

Georgia WAND invites YOU!

May 23, 2010

Honored Speaker: Dr. Mildred McClain

Reception: 4pm, Program: 5pm

Cosby Center, Spelman College

Georgia WAND celebrates Mother’s Day for Peace every year to honor those who have been working for peace in one of our three areas of concentration: women’s political empowerment, peace as an action verb, and environmental justice.

This year we're excited to have as our keynote speaker, Dr. Mildred McClain, a human rights and environmental justice activist in Georgia for over 30 years. Dr. McClain is Executive Director of Citizens for Environmental Justice, Inc., the Harambee House, Inc., and the Southern Association of Black Educators, Inc., in Savannah, Georgia. Dr. McClain founded Citizens for Environmental Justice, which delivers environmental education and information to African American and low-income communities. The Harambee House is a community center which focuses on political, socio-economic and community empowerment. The Southern Association of Black Educators works to uplift young people in the community.

We are also thrilled to honor amazing local activists Annie Laura Stephens of Shell Bluff, GA (Ed Arnold Environmental Justice Award), Dianne Valentin of Atlanta, GA (Faithful Service Award), and Jeannine Honicker of La Grange, GA (Environmental Activist Award).

Co-hosted with the Women’s Research & Resource Center at Spelman College.

Location:
Cosby Center (Auditorium), Spelman College
350 Spelman Lane SW
Atlanta, GA 30314

Parkway Cafe - Catering!

Enrique and Kristen Miranda were responsible for the DELICIOUS food catered at our event. Their restaurant is the Parkway Cafe and it is located at 1455 Lincoln Parkway, Suite 170, Atlanta, GA 30346. They were fabulous to work with and we highly recommend them. (678-772-5449 or email theparkwaycafe@gmail.com)

Parking

For those of you already familiar with Spelman College, please note that the large parking deck for visitors is closed for repairs. Here are three alternate parking options (two free lots; one pay):

1. After turning down Spelman Lane SW, park in the open air parking lot on your right (before the entrance to Spelman). Walk through the main gates and the Cosby Center will be straight ahead of you (slightly to your left) and there will be Georgia WAND Event signs to help point you in the right direction.

2. If the open air parking lot BEFORE Spelman College is full OR if you need handicap parking, continue on through the Spelman gates and into the open air parking lot on your left. This parking lot is directly in front of the Cosby Center. Again, please look for the Georgia WAND Event signs to point you in the right direction.

3. In the even that both open air parking lots are full, Morehouse has a parking deck, but please note that they do charge money. After parking, you’ll walk down Spelman Lane, through the main entrance gates, and follow the Georgia WAND Event signs to the Cosby Center.

Check-In

Check-in will be outside of the Cosby Center and we’ll have plenty of signs directing you to the main entrance. Miriam and Katie (our new Georgia WAND interns from UGA!) will be checking-in guests at the door. We've made name badges for all those who purchased tickets or who are a guest of another member...but, no fretting if your name isn't there! We'll be happy make you a name badge on the spot.
