Community Partner Event: Sustainable Atlanta Round Table

Join the discussion at the Sustainable Atlanta Round Table about shifting behavior towards habits that support a healthier, more sustainable world. They will examine the science of behavioral change through an environmental lens, focusing on specific campaigns in Atlanta and also how this applies to the goal of advancing a more sustainable world overall.

When: Friday, March 1, 7:30 AM - 9 AM (Doors open at 7 AM for networking.)

Where: All Saints Episcopal Church- Ellis Hall, 634 West Peachtree Street, Atlanta GA 30308

You can register in advance online for $15 or as a walk-in for $20. Online registration for the March 1st Roundtable will close Thursday, February 28th at 12 PM.

Community Partner Event: The Evelyn G. Lowery Civil Rights Heritage Tour

Experience the two-day tour traveling from Atlanta to Alabama, see the historic landmarks, and meet the people of the Civil Rights movement!

In remembrance of those who sacrificed and gave their lives to the movement, Mrs. Evelyn G. Lowery and SCLC/W.O.M.E.N., INC. have constructed thirteen memorials in their honor. Each year, she personally hosts the two-day Evelyn G. Lowery Civil Rights Heritage Educational Tour and retraces the steps of the Civil Rights Movement throughout Alabama.

Community Partner Event: Georgians for Better Transit Rally

Make your voice heard at the rally against House Bill 264! Now in the state Senate, the bill would seek to privatize the MARTA transit system and send the profits away from the local, instead to outside companies. The legislation also puts MARTA’s federal funding at risk, potentially costing $70 million a year in federal tax dollars.

Join the rally at the Georgia Capitol to keep MARTA local!

Participants include, but not limited to: ATU, Atlanta Labor Council, Atlanta 9 to 5, Coalition for the Peoples’ Agenda, Georgia State Conference NAACP, Georgia Stand Up, Georgia WAND, Rainbow PUSH, Urban League of Greater Atlanta, Clergy, concerned citizens and MARTA riders.

Georgia WAND Event: International Women’s Day Membership Celebration

Join Georgia WAND to commemorate International Women's Day and to mark the two year anniversary of Fukushima. There will be poems, songs, and tributes to the women leading the clean energy movement in Japan, India, and across the world.

Anniversary of Fukushima: March in Remembrance

The Anniversary of the Fukushima Meltdown is Monday, March 11. This year marks the two year anniversary. There will be a march in remembrance and in support of clean energy starting at the Midtown MARTA Plaza. Georgia WAND will be participating in this event.

Community Partner: Georgia Peace & Justice Coalition / Atlanta Monthly Meeting

Come and join the Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition / Atlanta for their monthly business and planning meeting! The meetings are usually held the third Monday of the month. Be a part of this opportunity to unite with a great group of organizations on issues facing our state. Everyone is welcome!

Community Partner Event: Women in the Halls

Planned Parenthood Southeast is continuing Women in the Halls! There will be a light breakfast, and then brief training and an issue review. Immediately after, you will head to the Capitol to speak out to you representatives!

At Georgia WAND’s session with the program, we addressed expanding Medicaid in Georgia. Join Women in the Halls again as they continue to advocate on this key issue!

Community Partner Event: Wind Energy Day

Come join Senator Lester Jackson and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) for an informative ‘Wind Energy Day’ at the Georgia State Capitol!  Hear from state experts and a wind energy manufacturer on Georgia’s wind energy resource potential, state wind activities, manufacturing and supply chain opportunities within the wind industry, offshore wind turbine technology, and an update on Southern Company’s interim lease application for a potential meteorological data collection facility offshore from Tybee Island, Georgia.

Community Event: Rally Against Rape Culture

Let's fight back against rape culture and CNN's awful coverage of the Steubenville rape case. Stand in solidarity with Jane Doe! Then march on the CNN center at noon. Speak out against rape culture and rape apologists. Bring your drums, signs, banners, bullhorns, and noise-makers!

Community Event: ‘Art for ALL’ Party

The International Action Center invites you to an ‘Art for ALL’ party, which will be an arts and activism space where the IAC office is located. They welcome you to visit their new home, look over their books and become active with them.

There will be art and craft displays, food, children's activities, and more. Come enjoy the creativity, meet artists and activists, and contribute to a growing community spirit.

Georgia WAND Event: Puppet Making Work Days

Sign up to be involved as we begin float preparations for the annual Inman Park Parade on Saturday April 27! Georgia WAND is excited to present our own float again this year, including peace puppets, song chants, music, and dancers of all ages.

We are showcasing our very own action hero, ‘WANDA WOMAN’, and her many helpers, taking on evil Atom Bombardo and the dreaded Drone! We need artists, puppet makers and anyone with wild ideas and a heart for peace.

Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board Meeting

The next Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board (CAB) meeting is this month. Please join Georgia WAND in participating at the CAB meeting, and make your voice heard on environmental justice issues in Georgia and around SRS.

All general meetings are open to the public with opportunities for comments.

Community Partner Event: Women in the Halls

Planned Parenthood Southeast is having their final Women in the Halls for 2013! This week will be a letter writing campaign to Governor Deal encouraging him to expand Medicaid. At Georgia WAND’s session with the program, we addressed expanding Medicaid in Georgia, and these key efforts continue!

At 9 AM, there will be a light breakfast, and then brief training and an issue review. At 10 AM, participants will start the letter writing campaign!

Community Partner Event: ‘Ban the Box’ Campaign Celebration

Join 9to5 Atlanta as they celebrate the momentous victory of their ‘Ban the Box’ Campaign!

Ban the Box refers to the nationwide movement to end employment discrimination against the formerly incarcerated by removing the question requiring job applicants to disclose their criminal background. The city of Atlanta has removed the discriminatory questions regarding past criminal offenses from their job applications.

The Ban the Box policy enables Reformed Citizens to build up their work history which will allow them to reintegrate into society, moving up the career ladder, and living a satisfying and crime free life.  Come celebrate this major milestone for 9to5 Atlanta, the city of Atlanta, and the Reformed Citizens of Atlanta.

Community Partner Event: Liberty Forsaken- Women in Incarceration

Join Georgia Detention Watch as they commemorate International Women's Day with a panel discussion, ‘Liberty Forsaken: Women in Incarceration.’ The panel will highlight the human rights abuses that women in detention face and will feature special guest Jessica Colotl, who will speak about her experience while in immigration detention. Learn more about the current situation of women in detention in Georgia and what you can do to be involved.

Community Event: Walter Rodney Public Speakers Series

Take the opportunity to hear a weekly series, celebrating Walter Rodney, an acclaimed Historian, activist, and Pan-Africanist! These events are free and open to the public and include different speakers all spring long.
