Community Partner Event: Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition / Atlanta Backyard Party

Join the Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition/Atlanta for a backyard party with beef and veggie hot dogs and burgers and frying fish. If you are able, please bring something fun to share for a cook-out, such as potato salad, dessert, baked beans, etc.

This is a benefit for GPJC; come join and support a volunteer network of community, faith, and student organizations / individuals committed to global justice and peace!

Georgia WAND Event: Nuclear Committee Meeting

The next Nuclear Committee Meeting is Monday, June 3! Join the discussion group focusing on all things nuclear: including weapons, waste, power, and clean-up. Come hear updates about current work and action being taken. Whether this is your first time or you’ve joined us before, this is a great opportunity to be involved!

Tune into WRFG Radio to hear a special voting rights program! They will be discussing the voting rights act, and both the history and current news involving voting rights cases and issues with host WRFG producer, Heather Gray, along with producer Dianne Mathiowetz.

Community Partner Event: Coalition for the People's Agenda Empowerment Meeting

Join the Coalition for the People’s Agenda for their next Tuesday Empowerment Meeting! Come take part in the work of a great group of civil rights, human rights, and peace and justice organizations.  

The meeting will be hosted by Coalition Member, Atlanta Branch NAACP. The pastor is Rev. Dr. R. L. White. Please note the location change.

Community Partner Event: 'Girl Rising' Film Showing

The RESULTS Atlanta Chapter is working to bring 'Girl Rising' to Atlanta on June 4, a new film about the power of education to transform lives and the importance of investing in girls’ education. Check out the trailer for the film here.

At least 100 people are needed to attend for the showing to happen; RSVP by COB Monday, May 27 to bring the film to Atlanta!

Immediately after the screening, participants will be invited to take action on global education policy!

Community Event: Nuns on the Bus Tour- Supporting Immigration Reform

The Nuns On the Bus Tour is traveling the U.S. to support comprehensive immigration reform, and will be stopping in Atlanta on Wednesday, June 5 for a press conference and visibility action at the office of Senator Chambliss. Come bring yourself and a sign if you would like to let the Senator know that this is the time for immigration reform!

Community Event: The Future of American Warfare?- Assessing the Legality of the Obama Administration's Use of Military Drones

Come hear a panel discussion on the constitutionality of President Obama’s policy on the use of drones, including the limits to their use, whether and when they could be used on American citizens, and the merits of constitutional concerns raised on the political left and the political right.

Community Partner Event: Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable- 'Transforming the World Through Reuse'

Come join the discussion with Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable! The Atlanta Community Food Bank, The Lifecycle Building Center and MedShare International are three mission-driven nonprofits that contribute to a more sustainable world in very important ways. Each organization’s commitment to sustainability reaches beyond material reuse and all three organizations practice separate and distinct forms of alchemy. Take part in the discussion and learn more about these innovative organizations and the transformational power of reuse!

Georgia WAND and Community Partner Event: Stand for Peace

Come out to Stand for Peace every Friday at 12 PM! Spread the message of peace at this weekly vigil, and then afterwards, join folks in the Colony Square Food Court for lunch, discussion, and fellowship.

Stand for Peace began over ten years ago to speak out against the Iraq War, and still continues every week to promote the message of ending wars and building peace.

The 414 Collective invites everyone with an artistic inclination to their second community Art for All Party! They are an emerging group of visual artists, craftsmen, musicians, vocalists, writers, poets, local activists, and artistic enthusiasts. This gathering is an opportunity for all those with artistic expression and appreciation to become acquainted, share their works or talents, and come together in community spirit!

Community Partner Event: First Anniversary Party and Atlanta Green Drinks

Come out for the first anniversary party of Atlanta’s only state-of-the-art retail biodiesel pump and hosting of Atlanta Green Drinks! There will be live music and food and drink specials.

You don’t need to drive a diesel vehicle to join!  This is a chance to celebrate and learn about the biodiesel fueling station and the successes in the first year. Come hear about building on these successes in the second year and the benefits and use of biodiesel and reducing your carbon footprint.

No RSVP is required, yet if you are on Facebook, you’re invited to RSVP via the event page.  All are welcome!

The event is co-hosted by Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) and Georgia Conservancy.

The Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition / Atlanta is hosting a meeting to discuss and evaluate actions at the international drone convention May 28-31 in Buckhead. Also, there will be a report on the ACS panel on drone assassinations, and discussion of future projects. Open to all who want to end drone assassinations and spying.

Community Event: Mayors Against Illegal Guns Rally

Join Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) at a rally at Senator Isakson’s Office. This is the launch date for the MAIG National Bus Tour, which begins in Newtown, Connecticut on the 6 month anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre. Survivors from victims’ families across America and others will travel from state to state giving testimony as to the crucial need for commonsense gun legislation.

People will gather on June 14 at Congressman Isakson’s office to stand in solidarity with the Sandy Hook victims’ families and all families who have lost loved ones to gun violence.

Come join Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition / Atlanta (GPJC) for their monthly business and planning meeting! GPJC is a volunteer network of community, faith, and student organizations / individuals committed to global justice and peace. They have organized hundreds of street demonstrations, educational programs and lobbying campaigns calling for fundamental foreign policy change, and have worked specifically for complete withdrawal of U.S. troops and bases from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Come see this month the 2011 film and Academy Award documentary nominee, ‘5 Broken Cameras’, a Palestinian farmer's chronicle of his nonviolent resistance to the actions of the Israeli army.

Popcorn and refreshments will be available, and there will be a discussion after the film led by Ilise Cohen & Dan Rice, of Interfaith Peace-Builders and Jewish Voice for Peace.

WAND Webinar: Pull the Plutonium Pork- End MOX

Georgia WAND continues to advocate for defunding nuclear weapons development and for a safe method of nuclear weapons dismantlement. However, the Department of Energy’s solution, the Mixed Oxide Plutonium Fuel Program (MOX), which is about making experimental fuel with weapons’ grade plutonium for use in commercial reactors, is costly, dangerous, and takes funds away from other nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear weapons cleanup priorities. Join Georgia WAND and National WAND for a free webinar to learn more about the MOX program and the alternatives needed to deal with plutonium from nuclear weapons. Speakers include Tom Clements of Friends of the Earth and Katherine Fuchs of the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability.

Georgia WAND will be attending a meeting of the Waste Management Subcommittee of the Savannah River Site Citizen’s Advisory Board (SRS CAB). In addressing our concerns about waste and cleanup, we will be there as they discuss the proposal for SRS to be interim storage for nuclear waste.

Community Partner Event: Immigration Reform Action

Come out and join OFA, coalition partners, and other supporters in focusing efforts on ‘A Path to Citizenship’ and urging Senators Isakson and Chambliss to support comprehensive immigration reform. Volunteers will be phone banking, writing letters, and using other grassroots tactics to reach members of Congress and urge them to support comprehensive reform. With an upcoming vote expected in the Senate, this is a key time to speak out about immigration reform.

Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) is hosting a Phone Banking event for Immigration Reform Support. At this action, people will be calling registered voters and urging them to call their U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives about supporting bi-partisan immigration reform.Help spread the word, and bring a cell phone; there will be pizza ordered for supper!

Are you questioning Pandora’s Promise of a nuclear solution to climate change? Following the theatrical premiere of Pandora’s Promise, a new pro-nuclear propaganda documentary, Georgia WAND and Nuclear Watch South are hosting a showing of The Atomic States of America. This 2012 film is an investigation of the truths, myths, and impacts of nuclear reactors on local communities. Join us for the film and discussion about the impacts of nuclear in Georgia and everywhere.

Join Planned Parenthood Southeast for a day in the park—Grant Park! The 6th annual Atlanta HBCU Alumni Alliance 5K and Health Fair is this month. They’ll have a table in the health fair and will need all hands on deck to help us spread the word about the great work of Planned Parenthood.
