We are happy to report that our Open House, which primarily served as the official follow-up meeting to the December 2018 Community Forum in Atlanta’s Neighborhood Planning Unit-V (NPU-V) was a success! Nearly 25 residents came out to pick where we left off at the successful forum at the end of last year. The Community Forum planning committee introduced themselves, gave a debrief of the December forum, named “Unity” as the theme for 2019, recommended committees to help guide the work for the year, and broke out into their committees to plan their next meetings.
On the road to the community forum in December, for a year Georgia WAND participated in a cohort, supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, that was focused on improving community relationships and creating the building blocks of a community-side collaboration in NPU-V. We joined five other organizations in the cohort: the Center for Working Families, 9to5 Georgia, Center for Black Women’s Wellness, and the Emmaus House.
Our collective goal was to support community activism, organizing, and advocacy and to provide impactful services. The cohort participated in sessions, received coaching, and completed a community engagement assessment facilitated by CommunityBuild Ventures.
The cohort decided each organization would host an open house and invite the community in order to listen to community needs and share what services and resources each organization provides the community. These learning opportunities have positioned the six NPU-V serving community organizations to grow in partnership with one another and to define a vision beyond the participating organizations. We make these commitments in solidarity with community efforts already underway to create a vibrant, thriving NPU-V. We look forward to continuing to support the community!
