Dr. Ira Helfand: Zero is the Only Option

Georgia WAND is pleased to host Dr. Ira Helfand in partnership with Physicians for Social Responsibility (and Citizens for Global Solutions (CGS). Dr. Helfand is an internationally renowned doctor and co-founder of PSR, a Nobel Peace Prize winning organization, whose pieces on the medical consequences of nuclear weapons and nuclear terrorism have been published throughout the United States. His presentation and 'town hall' style discussion will center on the danger of nuclear weapons and the importance of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) currently being debated in the U.S. Senate. This free event is cosponsored by the Social Concerns Committee of Atlanta Friends Meeting (www.quaker.org/atlanta).

Dr. Ira Helfand is a co-Founder and Past President of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and currently serves on PSR's board of directors.  He also represents PSR on the Board of PSR's global federation, the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize.  In December of 2009 he represented PSR and IPPNW at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony honoring President Obama.
He has published widely on the medical consequences of nuclear war and nuclear terrorism, including articles in the New England Journal of Medicine and the British Medical Journal, and has lectured throughout the United States and in Canada, the UK, Norway, Sweden, France, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Russia, China, India, Pakistan, and Cuba.
On May 15, 2008  Dr. Helfand testified before the US Senate Homeland Security Committee on developing a more adequate system in the United States for responding to medical disasters in general and nuclear terrorism in particular.
Dr Helfand is a specialist in Emergency Medicine and internal medicine and practices in Springfield MA. He received his Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Harvard College and received his Medical Degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
