Congress cuts funds for SRS Plutonium fuel factory, increases funding for real non-proliferation priorities

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed an amendment on June 6, 2012 that will move $17 million from the Mixed Oxide Plutonium Fuel (MOX) Program at South Carolina's Savannah River Site (SRS) to the Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRI). Members of the House from both sides of the aisle spoke in favor of the amendment, offered by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE)  during negotiations of appropriations for Department of Energy (DOE) funding. The final vote was 328 to 89.

The decision comes as a huge victory for Georgia WAND.  For eight years Georgia WAND has worked to defeat the funding for  MOX (mixed oxide fuel). Most recently, a delegation of eight Georgia WAND women traveled to Washington DC to speak with decision makers about high-risk DOE projects, including cutting funding for the  MOX plant in favor of non-proliferation efforts and environmental cleanup at SRS.

The MOX plant at SRS would take weapons-grade plutonium from old nuclear bombs and turn it into hot plutonium fuel to run in commercial nuclear reactors - something our nation  promised years ago that we would never do! Futhermore, no utilities have contracted to us MOX plutonium fuel.

Take a moment to thank the Georgia legislators that supported this amendment!

Tell them thank you for voting for the Fortenberry amendment on June 6th and standing against this wasteful nuclear spending and up for real non-proliferation projects. Call or email today!
