Becky Rafter to attend Human Rights Defenders Forum

Becky Rafter is one of nearly 70 activists, peacemakers, and community leaders from at least 25 countries who will come together July 21-24 for the Carter Center’s annual Human Rights Defenders Forum to discuss “Restoring Faith in Freedom.”

Topics will include economic and social rights, building faith in institutions, strengthening the social contract, and the recent backlash against human rights defenders. The Forum also will showcase the experiences of the courageous women and men on the front lines of the fight for human rights.

At this point in time characterized by multi-national corporations prioritizing profits over life, countries falling back on militarism instead of diplomacy, and environmental injustices inflicted on the most vulnerable continuing to be exacerbated by a changing climate, this Forum is more important than ever.

The Conclusions of the 2018 Human Rights Defenders Forum will be live webcast on Tuesday July 24 from 3:50 – 5:00pm EDT, featuring remarks by Andrew Gilmour, representative of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights; Canadian Senator Mobina Jaffer, and Georgia’s own President Jimmy Carter, with a moderated discussion and a livestream Q&A with President Carter (4:30 to 4:50 p.m).
