Annie Laura Howard Stephens Receives the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Award

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” This quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is exemplified in Georgia WAND community leader Annie Laura Howard Stephens. For years, she has worked to elevate the voices of her community and hold accountable the nuclear industries that impact her community in Shell Bluff and others along the Central Savannah River Area in Georgia and South Carolina. Her love for mankind and the earth is expressed in her speech, smile, and hard work. She always says that nuclear waste, power, and weapons know no gender, race, or location.

In January 2020, Mrs. Annie Laura Howard Stephens was presented with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Award for her stewardship and service in the local community of Burke County. She has boldly carried the torch and lead the community in envisioning a healthy and prosperous future.  The event, “A Legacy of Service,” was held by the Burke County Churches Benevolent Association and Burke County Improvement Association at the 2nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Banquet in Waynesboro, Georgia.

Congratulations, Mrs. Annie Laura Stephens!! You have been a trailblazer! Georgia WAND is ever-grateful for your service and always reminding us to “be encouraged.”
