Students Send Message to Candidates: We say NO and vote NO to ‘High Risk Energy’
What: Press Conference and student rally at the Georgia State Capitol followed by a march to early voting at the Fulton County Government Center, sponsored by Georgia Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND), Southern Energy Network, and Sierra Club/ Georgia Chapter
Who: October 20 marks the six month anniversary of the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig explosion. Students and environmental groups from across Georgia will gather on the steps of the State Capitol to take a stand for clean, renewable and safe energy. They will urge elected officials and political candidates to reject proposals and subsidies that continue to support unsustainable, unsafe, and costly high risk energy.
Why: As the largest oil spill in history, the BP accident created shockwaves across the Gulf Coast and beyond. The disaster alerted voters to the dangers of offshore drilling and the risks of other forms of dirty energy extraction. It was a crude awakening. Young people are calling for the United States to implement strong policies for all energy sources in order to keep workers and communities safe and the environment clean. They advocate a clean energy future; one that creates millions of new jobs, is safe, and protects us from global warming.
When: Wednesday, October 20th, rally 11:00 am, press conference 11:30 am
Where: Georgia Capitol / Washington Street side
