Join GA WAND and Spelman on 4/15 Global Day of Action on Pentagon Spending
On April 15th, 2015, Georgia WAND will be hosting a Global Day of Action on Pentagon Spending/Tax Day at Spelman College from 6:00-7:30 pm at the Science Center in the NASA Auditorium, room 134. Georgia WAND interns, Marissa Daniels, Spelman College Senior, and Andrea Sweetman, Agnes Scott College Sophomore, will be joined by Georgia WAND Executive Director, Becky Rafter, in presenting information to Spelman students about how students, especially young women, can end militarism and systemic violence. A critical tool necessary to transform a culture of war at home and abroad to a culture of peace and unity is to take our federal budget back from the Pentagon and redirect federal, public resources to human development and basic needs for the general population and the environment. The role of young women becoming political active, voting, and leading this struggle is key to its success.
The Department of Defense budget is at an all time high. Do you feel any safer?
When we spend more than half of our federal budget on the Pentagon, it doesn’t make us more secure. Instead of pouring money into militarizing the police, wasteful defense contracting, and 50-year old nuclear weapons delivery systems, let’s create comprehensive solutions that address the root causes of conflict. And students and young women must secure seats at the decision-making table. Our security requires investment in financial aid and education, soldiers and veterans care, good jobs/job training, transportation and infrastructure, nutrition, health care, affordable housing, and other services that provide economic security to our families and a brighter future for our children.
