Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition Meeting: Battle at the Capitol
Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition welcomes you to our first quarterly meeting in 2013! This evening, local activists working within the legislature will inform us of upcoming legislation so we can plug into ongoing work. This will give us the opportunity to prepare for a "battle at the capitol" in the early months of the new year.
The topics for the main panel are budget and policy, women's healthcare, immigration, and prison justice/the death penalty. Panelists will make a brief presentation and the floor will be open for questions. There will also be opportunities for other organizations to table.
Panelists include Larry Pellegrini of the Georgia Rural Urban Summit; Alan Essig of the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute; Janelle Yamarick of the Feminist Women's Health Center; and Kathryn Hamoudah of the Southern Center for Human Rights.

GA Coalition for the People's Agenda: 1st Meeting of the Year
The Georgia Coalition for the People's Agenda will be holding its first meeting of the new year, hosted by Georgia Women's Action for New Directions (WAND).
Come out and connect with a great group of civil rights, human rights, and peace and justice organizations as they start work for the year 2013!

Women in the Halls Kickoff Party!
Come and join a great new year with the citizen lobbying program, Women in the Halls!
The 2013 Georgia legislative session starts on Monday, January 14th, and Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates are inviting you to a kickoff party on Thursday, January 10 with food, fun, festivities, and civic action!
Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates will be joining with other progressive organizations every Wednesday for lobby training and updates on pertinent legislation to learn about working for responsible legislation in Georgia. Come attend the start of this exciting civic action with a party on Thursday!
Admission is free, and there will be complimentary appetizers available.

Georgia Equality: Citizen Advocacy Training
Come attend Citizen Advocacy Training for the year 2013!
Participants will learn about effectively communicating with elected officials, will receive an update on the most important issues facing the LGBT and HIV communities during this year’s legislative session, and will also learn how to speak out effectively for equality in their offices, neighborhoods, churches and in the local media.
When: Saturday, January 12, 11 AM- 4 PM

Third Friday Film Series: “Slavery by Another Name”
Come out and see Samuel D. Pollard’s, “Slavery by Another Name” (2012), a film that was nominated for the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and that challenges one of our cherished assumptions- that slavery ended with the Emancipation Proclamation.
Popcorn and refreshments will be available!
Donations are welcome - $1 to $10 sliding scale.
Stay for the discussion after the film, led by historian and DSA member Jeff Bragg.
The film showing is sponsored by the Metro Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and First E’s Social Justice Guild.

MLK Day of Action
Join the Georgia WAND team and walk or run with us in the MLK Day 5K!! The walk/run will happen at Piedmont Park. For each team member registered under our name, Georgia WAND receives $5 of their registration.
This will be a Day of Action and a Day of Fun, and from the walk/run, we will head to the MLK March where we will join up with our progressive coalition partners!!

SRS CAB Meeting in Augusta
Join the Savannah River Site (SRS) Citizens Advisory Board (CAB)* meeting in Augusta!
All general meetings are open to the public with opportunities for comments. The January 28-29 meeting will be key because environmental monitoring in Georgia around the SRS area is on the agenda.
We are continuing to bring the need for monitoring to the light, and speaking out for environmental justice around Savannah River Site!

Women in the Halls: A Special Roe v. Wade Edition
Come out for a special advocacy training and opportunity to lobby our Georgia legislators, marking the 40th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision!
Every Wednesday during the legislative session, Planned Parenthood Southeast has a lobby day, the Women in the Halls program, at the Georgia State Capitol. Wednesday, January 30 will be a special Roe v. Wade Edition. The day will start with light breakfast, training, and information on the issues in the Coverdell building and will immediately follow with lobbying at the Capitol!

PSC Energy Committee Meeting
Come attend the next Public Service Commission energy committee meeting on January 31!
In the light of the accident with the Plant Vogtle Schnabel railcar that was compromised and became misaligned, the January 23 PSC meeting on Vogtle construction was cancelled.
Let’s show the PSC and Georgia Power that we are still keeping our eyes vigilant on the disasters with the Vogtle project and be a presence at this upcoming meeting.

AFL-CIO Union Organizer Training Application Deadline
Do you have an interest in a union organizer career or know about someone who does? The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations is recruiting talented and motivated people who want to work in the Labor Movement full time, long term.
They will be having a 3 day training in mid-Feb.: Deadline to Apply: Thurs., Jan.31 by the close of business.
The OI program consists of the intense weekend classroom training followed by a paid 12-week Apprenticeship Program in which selected applicants learn union-building skills first-hand.
