About

Mother's Day for Peace, our annual Signature Event and fundraiser, allows us time to come together to celebrate our hard work and remember the vision of strong women like Julia Ward Howe who, in 1870, called for a national assembly of women who would devote themselves to ending war. The original ‘mother’s day for peace’ was marked by Ms. Ward’s delivery of the Peace Proclamation which continues to inspire women around the world. Mother's Day for Peace is also a time when we invite powerful and creative women into our midst and have their voices inspire us, tell us a story, and remind us of our humanity.

In past years keynote speakers and honorees have included Alice Walker, Melissa Fay Greene, Janiesse Ray, the Georgia Gold Star Mothers for Peace, environmental justice heroine Mildred McClain, and former AJC columnist, Martha Ezzard. We have also been privileged to count among Honorary Chairs Mayor Shirley Franklin; President Dr. Elizabeth Kiss of Agnes Scott College and President Dr. Beverly Tatum of Spelman College; playwright and poet Pearl Cleage; and Rhonda Mims, President, ING Foundation.

Keynote Speaker

Kristen Iversen is a mother, teacher, author and activist. She grew up in Arvada, Colorado near the Rocky Flats nuclear weaponry facility and received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Denver. She is Director of the MFA Program in Creative Writing at The University of Memphis and also Editor-in-Chief of The Pinch, an award-winning literary journal. During the summers she serves on the faculty of the MFA Low-Residency Program at The University of New Orleans, held in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and Edinburgh, Scotland.

She is the author of Full Body Burden: Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats and Molly Brown: Unraveling the Myth, winner of the Colorado Book Award for Biography and the Barbara Sudler Award for Nonfiction. Several documentaries have been based on this book. Iversen is also the author of a textbook, Shadow Boxing: Art and Craft in Creative Nonfiction.

Full Body Burden is a haunting work of narrative nonfiction about Kristen's experience growing up in a small Colorado town close to Rocky Flats, a secret nuclear weapons plant once designated “the most contaminated site in America.” Critics have called the book one of the most important stories of the nuclear era and as personal and powerful as Silkwood.

It’s the story of a childhood and adolescence in the shadow of the Cold War, in a landscape at once startlingly beautiful and—unknown to those who lived there—tainted with invisible yet deadly particles of plutonium. It’s also a book about the destructive power of secrets—both family and government. Her father’s hidden liquor bottles, the strange cancers in children in the neighborhood, the truth about what was made at Rocky Flats (cleaning supplies, her mother guessed)—best not to inquire too deeply into any of it.

Most people under the age of 50, in both countries, are not aware of the intensity of the political struggle that led to the universal medical care system in Canada. Nor are they aware of the public relations campaigns, still active today, that have been prevalent in the United States since the early 1900’s to dissuade the public from supporting national health care

Come to the Capitol Thursday, March 28 at 10 am to Oppose SB 469!

Thursday is the last day of the legislative session and in all likelihood SB 469 WILL BE VOTED ON THAT DAY.

Take action, its as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4.

1) We are asking EVERYONE to come to the Capitol this Thursday beginning at 10:00 a.m. The session will last until midnight so come whenever you can!

2) Please also call your State Representative and tell them to oppose SB 469. Follow this link to contact your Rep

3) Call the House Speaker, Rep. David Ralston, at 404-656-5020. Tell his office you oppose SB 469, which would violate Georgians' constitutional rights, and SB 447, which would leave jobless families stranded and hurt the local businesses.

4) We need as many Georgians as possible to stand united when legislators decide whether or not to send SB 469 and SB 447 to the governor. Union members, unaffiliated workers, students, retirees, neighbors, friends, relatives, faith leaders - we're all impacted by this extreme, overreaching legislation. Spread the word by using this link.

Several hundred thousand people across the world marched and rallied on or around March 11, 2012, the anniversary of the nuclear disaster at Fukushima, Japan. In Georgia, Georgia WAND , along with over 50 friends and members from across Georgia headed to Shell Bluff, Georgia, a community that lies in the shadow of nuclear Plant Vogtle and the Savannah River Site, a nuclear weapons complex. We gathered with the Shell Bluff community to remember the victims of Fukushima , to stand with the Georgians most directly effected by the nuclear industry, and renew our commitment to our work for a nuclear free future.

The first two nuclear reactors built in the U.S. in thirty years have begun being constructed at Plant Vogtle in Shell Bluff. We joined with the Shell Bluff community and were welcomed at the Fairfield Missionary Baptist Church. As part of the day’s festivities, we shared in delicious home cooked meal and enjoyed the sunny day outside listening to presenters and musicians on stage. We heard translated stories written by in Japan, songs from members of the church, and enjoyed artistic dance and music. (Special thanks to Eliza, Jaclyn and Bill Fleming, Craig Rafuse, Joanne Steele, Tom Ferguson, Maedella and Kenyana!!) Our special guest speakers were, Shoji Kihara, acclaimed author and anti-nuclear activist from Japan, Brother Utsumi, a Buddhist monk from a Japanese Nipponzan Myuhoji order, as well as Pat Carter, who spoke of her experiences during the Three Mile Island nuclear accident. Thanks to all who joined with us and shared this wonderful experience. We Are Georgia - Mass Rally - Good Jobs, Free Speech, Human Rights, Not Partisan Attacks!

The Georgia legislature is rapidly advancing bills that aim to destroy fundamental human rights and constitutional protections- across the board- from attacks on workers and our organizations, to woman, people of color, youth and students, the unemployed and any one engaged in first amendment protected protests.Collectively, these bills will set Georgians back over 100 years. We can not afford to let that happen. We need thousands of Georgians to join this demonstration!

When: March 17th at 11am.

Where: State Capitol

Working families and those that defend free speech rights have focused on Senate Bill 469 - a politically-driven bill intended to intimidate Georgia's working families.

SB 469 would criminalize forms of public pickets for economic justice, effectively de-fund Georgia’s unions, and further penalize political non-violent civil disobedience. In short, the bill is a full scale assault on fundamental human and democratic rights.

SB 469 is part of a broad effort to weaken the middle class in order to benefit the 1%. The bill shares characteristics of model legislation from ALEC, an out-of-state, secretive, corporate-funded council that hands state legislators laws designed to benefit CEOs.

Read the entire bill here: http://www1.legis.ga.gov/legis/2011_12/sum/sb469.htm

SB 469 seeks to silence dissent and any opposition to corporate and government policies at a time when millions of working families continue to suffer the hardships and pain of this economic crisis.

SB 469 affects us all - Georgia’s 99%. Its time we tell the Georgia Senate to say ‘NO’ to this anti-democratic, anti-labor, anti-freedom bill. Spread the word about this event, far and wide. Let’s build for a MASSIVE DEMONSTRATION on Saturday March 17th at 11am.

Atlanta Flower Festival and Peacemaker Award honoring Mike Vosburg-Casey

The ceremony will include interfaith prayer and conclude with the 8th presentation of the Lil & Bill Corrigan Peacemakers Award to Mike Vosburg-Casey.

For anyone who gets out on the streets in Atlanta, Mike is a familiar face at peace vigils and among the homeless, frequently accompanied by his 20-month-old daughter, Elena. We have long admired the way Mike puts his Christian faith into practice by associating with and supporting the poor and exploited, much in the way that Jesus did. Georgia WAND members and supporters have long enjoyed Mike's faithful presence at Stand for Peace every Friday. A few months back, this good and gentle friend of ours and of all who seek justice was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, a devastating diagnosis at any age, but all the more so for a 37-year-old husband and father. With the support of many prayers and the medical resources of Emory University, Mike is making good progress, and the cancer seems to be in retreat. We present the Peacemaker Award this year in love and gratitude for Mike's work and as a symbol of the hope and prayers we all hold for him and his family.

When: Saturday, March 31, 11 am

Where: 1127 Glenwood Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30316

As always, the ceremony will be followed by lunch. Please feel free to bring friends to the event and flowers to offer to the altar. Parking is available nearby at a parking lot on the corner of Moreland and Glenwood (Buffalo China side) or on nearby streets. Please contact Denise or Utsumi 404.627.8948 or visit www.atlantadojo.org for more information
