About Mother's Day for Peace

MOTHER’s DAY FOR PEACE – our annual Signature Event and fundraiser—commemorates the vision of Julia Ward Howe, poet and suffragist who, after viewing the Civil War battlefields, called for a national assembly of women who would devote themselves to ending war. The original ‘mother’s day for peace’ was marked by Ms. Ward’s delivery of the 1870 Peace Proclamation which continues to inspired women around the world.

In past years keynote speakers and honorees have included Alice Walker, Melissa Fay Greene, Janiesse Ray, the Georgia Gold Star Mothers for Peace, environmental justice heroine Mildred McClain, and former AJC columnist, Martha Ezzard. We have also been privileged to count among Honorary Chairs Mayor Shirley Franklin; President Dr. Elizabeth Kiss of Agnes Scott College and President Dr. Beverly Tatum of Spelman College; playwright and poet Pearl Cleage; and Rhonda Mims, President, ING Foundation.
