Who: Winona LaDuke is an internationally acclaimed author, orator and activist. A graduate of Harvard & Antioch with advanced degrees in rural economic development, LaDuke has devoted her life to protecting the lands and lifeways of Native communities. In addition to her work with Honor the Earth, LaDuke founded the White Earth Land Recovery Project and ran twice for vice president in 1996 and 2000 as a Green Party candidate with Ralph Nader. She was honored as Ms. Magazine’s Woman of the Year in 1997 and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
Why: Mother’s Day for Peace, Georgia WAND's annual Signature Event and fundraiser, commemorates the vision of Julia Ward Howe, poet and suffragist who, after viewing the Civil War battlefields, called for a national assembly of women who would devote themselves to ending war. This original “mother’s day for peace” was marked by Ms. Ward’s delivery of the 1870 Peace Proclamation which continues to inspire women around the world.
