Mother’s Day for Peace
Georgia WAND invites YOU!
May 23, 2010
Honored Speaker: Dr. Mildred McClain
Reception: 4pm, Program: 5pm
Cosby Center, Spelman College
Georgia WAND celebrates Mother’s Day for Peace every year to honor those who have been working for peace in one of our three areas of concentration: women’s political empowerment, peace as an action verb, and environmental justice.
This year we're excited to have as our keynote speaker, Dr. Mildred McClain, a human rights and environmental justice activist in Georgia for over 30 years. Dr. McClain is Executive Director of Citizens for Environmental Justice, Inc., the Harambee House, Inc., and the Southern Association of Black Educators, Inc., in Savannah, Georgia. Dr. McClain founded Citizens for Environmental Justice, which delivers environmental education and information to African American and low-income communities. The Harambee House is a community center which focuses on political, socio-economic and community empowerment. The Southern Association of Black Educators works to uplift young people in the community.
We are also thrilled to honor amazing local activists Annie Laura Stephens of Shell Bluff, GA (Ed Arnold Environmental Justice Award), Dianne Valentin of Atlanta, GA (Faithful Service Award), and Jeannine Honicker of La Grange, GA (Environmental Activist Award).
Co-hosted with the Women’s Research & Resource Center at Spelman College.
